The Threat - Pandemic - S1E3

The global fight against infectious diseases has a new tactic called “genetic surveillance.” Dr. Bronwyn MacInnis leads a team of researchers that uses genetic surveillance to halt the spread of deadly microbes. To do it, she and her colleagues openly share information. That kind of collaboration is required of players in Pandemic, in which each player takes on the role of a professional in the field. The game’s designer, Matt Leacock, tells us how the game came together. Removing cubes from a board isn’t a matter of life and death, but combating global contagions is.

Place of Miracles - Viticulture - S1E1

Villa Milagro is a vineyard and winery in western New Jersey. There are green fields with trees along the edges, rolling hills on the horizon, and grape vines in nice neat rows. Chief winemaker Audrey Gambino takes us behind the "dream life" of running the vineyard. Romanticized visions of that job are what led Jamey Stegmaier of Stonemaier Games to create Viticulture, the strategic game of winemaking. It turns out that the thing that makes the game different from running a real business is the same thing that makes it pleasant to play.
